Our decision to take a ride out of Montana, coupled with my need to get a new tire, paid an unexpected dividend – it enabled us to get to Spearfish, SD, instead of Belle Fourche (fun facts: “Fourche” is pronounced “Foosh”, Seth Bullock [cf. Deadwood, History of] is credited with being the town’s founder and Belle Fourche is officially recognized as the geographic center of the 50 states). The guy at the bike shop said, “If you’re riding across the country, you have to ride the canyon. You’ll thank me later.” Always trust your local bike shop; thanks bike dude!
